P. H. Diamond University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA Abstract This paper reports on a recent advance in developing physical understanding and a firstprinciples-based model for predicting intrinsic rotation profiles in magnetic fusion experiments. It is shown for the first time that turbulent fluctuation-driven residual stress (a non-diffusive component of momentum flux) along with diffusive momentum flux can account for both the shape and magnitude of the observed intrinsic toroidal rotation profile. Both turbulence intensity gradient and zonal flow E × B shear are identified as major contributors to the generation of the k∥-asymmetry needed for the residual stress generation. The model predictions of core rotation based on global gyrokinetic simulations agree well with the experimental measurements of main ion toroidal rotation for a set of DIII-D ECH discharges. The validated model is further used to investigate the characteristic dependence of residual stress and intrinsic rotation profile structure on the multi-dimensional parametric space covering turbulence type, q-profile structure, and up-down asymmetry in magnetic geometry with the goal of developing the physics understanding needed for rotation profile control and optimization. It is shown that in flat-q profile regime intrinsic rotations driven by ITG and TEM turbulence are in opposite direction (i.e, intrinsic rotation reverses). The predictive model also produces reversed intrinsic rotation for plasmas with weak and normal shear q-profiles.

A Study to Predict the Development of Wear for the Wheel/interface of a Railway Track

The train transport is often confronted with greatly repeated changes in scope, vehicle travel well-being and transport safety because of the adjustments of wheel and rail profiles. These problems are frustrating and threatening. Thus, there is a requirement for an approach to predicting the wear of wheel/rail to tackle these problems. A new theoretical ground is broken through the build-up a m...

Density sensitivity of intrinsic rotation profiles in ICRF-heated L-mode plasmas

The physical mechanisms that cause tokamak plasmas to rotate toroidally without external momentum input are of considerable interest to the plasma physics community. This paper documents a substantial change in both the magnitude of the core rotation frequency, -3 < ω(r/a=0) < +10 kHz, and the sign of rotation shear at mid-radius, u’=-Rdω/dr/vth,i,, which varies between -0.6 < u’ < +0.8 in resp...

The Edge Temperature Gradient as Intrinsic Rotation Drive in Alcator C-Mod Tokamak Plasmas

Intrinsic core toroidal rotation has been observed in I-mode plasmas from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, and is found to be very similar to the rotation in H-mode discharges, both in its edge origin, profile shape and in the scaling with global plasma pressure. Since Iand H-mode plasmas have similar pedestal temperature gradients, but completely different edge density profiles, it may be concluded ...

Intrinsic Torque and the Global Structure of Self-consistent Intrinsic Rotation Profiles in Flux-Driven ITG Turbulence

Global, heat flux-driven gyrokinetic simulations which manifest the formation of macroscopic, mean toroidal flow profiles, with thermal Mach number 0.05, is observed in global ITG simulations. Both PIC (XGC1) and Semi-Lagrangian (GYSELA) approaches are utilized without apriori assumptions of scaleseparation between turbulence and mean fields. ITG simulations with no-slip boundary condition usin...
